Taylor has among the highest rate of youth unemployment in SA. Our young people need to be in steady work and give them a purpose in life. SA-BEST will strongly support assistance programs to help them find the right pathways. And the TAFE mess needs to be fixed ASAP so young people and mature aged unemployed have decent vocational training opportunities that lead to real jobs.
I’m Sonja Taylor and I’m running for the seat of Taylor at the state election for SA-BEST.
I have lived and breathed the northern suburbs my entire life, so understanding the area and the needs of its people comes naturally to me.
Like so many others I feel badly let down by so many issues - power prices, health services, youth unemployment, affordable housing and substance abuse (especially ‘ice’).
I am a daughter, sister, aunty, cousin, niece, friend, colleague and neighbour. You see, I’m just like you, I’m one of you, and I have an incredible opportunity to be in the race to be your voice.
Most importantly I am a mother, which is by far the most challenging and rewarding job I have. I’m a single mother to my 2 children who I’m raising in Davoren Park.
I’ve spent my entire life in the northern suburbs so I know deep within what challenges you, my neighbours, face on a daily basis. I understand that the foundations of any great place are built on community spirit and that’s something we have strength in. It’s something that sets us apart from the rest. It’s with this community spirit I believe the greatest change will come about and that’s something I am passionate about.
I live simply. I keep it real and that’s how I roll because when it all comes down to it, we’re all human beings living and trying to make the best of what we have.
I’m currently working part-time as a bookkeeper at Dixon Gallasch, a well-established law firm in the north. My other time is spent volunteering as the board of directors at Cos We Care, a self-funded, not-for-profit local charity organisation that assists and engages those in the community who are homeless, disadvantaged, at risk, or vulnerable.
Prior to my work with Cos We Care, I was part of a Relay for Life team for seven years, relentlessly raising funds for Cancer Council SA.
I believe in the gift of giving, and believe giving time, compassion, empathy and, most importantly, effort can be even more important that money. I’ve spent most of my life living by a strong set of personal core values relating to giving back to others and I’ve seen the great things this philosophy can achieve.

Some of the issues in Taylor that need action…
Taylor needs more affordable housing for low-income earners and those battling on welfare. Urging government to give greater priority to this important issue will be a priority for SA-BEST.
SA-BEST will implement policies to help gambling addicts get the rehabilitation they deserve, and slash levels of gambling harm in SA, especially from poker machines and online gambling.
Health and aged care
Provision of treatment facilities for mental health patients need urgent attention. With our ageing population, improved care and accommodation must be provided for seniors. Access to health facilities is another priority.
Crystal methamphetamine or ‘ice’ is wrecking lives every day and abuse is particularly bad in Adelaide’s north. SA-BEST push for programs that help break the cycle of drug abuse and help those stricken with addiction, as well as cracking down on dealers.
