The Weatherill Government allowed the Mount Gambier Hospital to become sub-standard. Key priorities are the improvement of Accident and Emergency waiting times, the recruitment and retention of specialists and doctors, staff morale and working conditions. We shouldn’t have to travel six hours for basic services. We also need to address mental health and suicide and access to services.
My name is Kate Amoroso and I’m the SA-BEST candidate for the seat of Mount Gambier.
I grew up in Mount Gambier and have been involved with local sporting clubs most of my life. I have three wonderful children and one perfect granddaughter. They give me the strength and inspiration to make this world a better place for them.
Many of you will know me through my advocacy for Drug and Alcohol services. In standing for this position I represent anyone who has battled issues with addiction, mental health, domestic violence and sexual assault. I’m living proof that change can happen. I’ve emerged a stronger person – and I’m determined to be part of the solution for people like me and their loved ones.
For three years I have worked in particular to bring change and much-needed understanding of the issues surrounding the drug ‘ice’ and its devastating effects on families. It’s now a multi-generational problem. During this journey I’ve seen an abysmal lack of government accountability and transparency. The Weatherill government, through its inaction, has allowed a hopeless and vicious circle to become embedded in many SA communities. Those most in need of help have been silenced. It’s time to give those people a voice.
I’m an active member of six local working parties and/or governance committees to do with health, corporate services, community engagement, and social inclusion. I’m also a volunteer at the Migrant Centre and at Meals on Wheels. These experiences have given me a good grasp of the problems in our electorate and what needs to change.
The Mount Gambier region is a beautiful area with so much to offer. But over the past 16 years the Rann/Weatherill Labor government has totally neglected the needs of our people while the Liberals stand idly by and fail to hold them to account. I will be a strong, local voice who will represent everyone in our community, regardless of their socio-economic, ethnic or political background. In SA-BEST, I am giving give you an alternative to the major parties controlled by either big unions or big business.
Together, we can demand what is required to make our local economy and tourism thrive, strengthen our families and community spirit, and make the Mount the best it can be!
You can email me at firstname.lastname@example.org or call the campaign office on (08) 8545 0400 and arrange to meet up with me to discuss any issue that concerns you in Mount Gambier.
With best wishes,
P.S. If you would like to get involved in the campaign as a volunteer that would be great. Call or email me, or contact the SA-BEST campaign office on (08) 8545 0400.

My Focus for Mount Gambier
Mount Gambier needs services, support groups, education programs, and funding for Detox and rehab beds. SA-BEST also advocates mandatory rehabilitation for those addicted to ice and support for their families.
Fracking & forestry
I strongly oppose Labor’s plans for an expansion of gas fields across the south east and support a 10-year moratorium on fracking. I also support a thorough review of the forestry industry to find ways to support its future growth and more jobs.
Energy prices & cost of living
Electricity prices in SA are amongst the highest in the world. SA-BEST’s energy plan is all about getting prices down with more reliable supply and greater competition.
Employment & underemployment
Mount Gambier’s unemployment rate is the above the national average. We need to increase the number and quality of courses being offered by TAFE (another government mess) and the universities to create a wider range of opportunities for our youth. Our goal should be for them to have the opportunity to study, work and stay in our region.
The State Government needs to do more to promote our beautiful city and its surroundings. It needs to tap into the national and international market with better promotion and upgraded facilities to attract more visitors. It also needs to create incentives for our young people to start their own tourism ventures.
