Let's Make It Happen in Heysen!

I'm John Illingworth and I've served South Australia as a police officer for over thirty years and have been an active member of the Hills community in both charity and community work. I am proud to be a South Australian and I am passionate about our State. Like many, I have seen how broken our political system is, with the toxic party politics of Liberal and Labor.

I could just sit back and voice criticism from the sidelines. That’s just not me. I have decided to stand up and do something about the current political mess.

We need a government that:

  • Embraces change, whilst keeping a watchful eye on its impacts;
  • Actively promotes new opportunities to bring prosperity to SA; and
  • Implements polices and procedures to end the excesses of wasteful spending.

We must put an end to the constant political bickering and look for the best result for our State, irrespective of whose idea it is.

Because I want to be part of real change you can trust, I have joined Nick Xenophon’s SA-BEST team.

I’m working with like-minded people who understand that the community expects and deserves honest, accountable government. It is our commitment to assess issues on their merits, influence decision-making and create good community outcomes.

In the Hills-Fleurieu community, issues such as public transport, mental health and hospital services, the quality of our roads and traffic volumes all need urgent attention.

You can contact me via email at john.illingworth@sabest.org.au or call the campaign office on (08) 8545 0400.

It’s time to bring back honesty and common sense to politics.

With Best Wishes,

Some of the issues I will be focussing on:

Park and Ride at Wistow

I will campaign for a “Park & Ride” at or near Wistow, which would service both new developments, as well as Strath commuters. This would reduce traffic through Mt Barker and on the freeway. This would assist with reducing some of the bottleneck at Stirling/Crafers, as well as easing the burden on existing facilities.

Too many residents in the electorate have no access to the internet. They are too far from the exchange, or a node, and get nothing. They use mobile telephone ‘dongles’ or satellite, even though they are only 12 km from the GPO. We deserve affordable and quality broadband and will work for a better service in Heysen.

Health Services

I will fight to improve services at the Strathalbyn and Mt Barker Hospitals. I am particularly concerned about dialysis, where patients need a 5-hour treatment three times per week. A four-bed dialysis unit at Mt Barker would be a huge benefit to Hills Fleurieu residents, who currently have to travel to Victor Harbor, Murray Bridge or Adelaide at their cost.

Mental health issues are also a growing concern, and there is a clear need to improve mental health resources at Strathalbyn and Mt Barker hospitals. And having resources to tackle substance abuse – especially ice needs to be a high priority.

Natural Resources

Our environmental assets need to be protected effectively and efficiently. The NRM must be responsive and accountable to communities, needs and expectations.
