People of Croydon need better access to the city. I will push for a railway bridge to be constructed over Torrens Road at Ovingham and for Barton St West to be reopened to traffic to and from War Memorial Drive. I would like to consult residents in the electorate about the “traffic calming” measures that have been placed on our streets and whether they need to be reviewed.
Let’s Cut the Crap in Croydon!
My name is Julia Karpathakis and I’m your SA-BEST candidate for Croydon in the upcoming State election, to be held on March 17.
I apologise if I’ve offended you with the headline, but like so many others, I’m fed up with being taken for granted in a seat that Labor has always held, and the Liberals just don’t seem to care about.
I’m a true local. I was born on Eleventh St in Bowden, around the corner from where my father opened the first feta cheese factory in SA on Hawker St. I have lived in this area all my life. I went to Brompton Primary School and then to Croydon High before studying at the SA School of Fine Arts. I am now a single mother with three adult children. While raising them I also cared for my father in our Croydon home, before he passed away two years ago.
I am a strong campaigner for pokies reform and have personally experienced first-hand the horrors of pokies addiction. I met Nick Xenophon about 17 years ago and he played a crucial role in my recovery. I attended Pokies Anonymous and eventually started coordinating the meetings in a leadership role.
I’ve worked as a community educator on health, for migrants and refugees. I know what it’s like to struggle with a tight budget, having been on welfare raising a family. Our power prices are too high, and ‘Transforming Health’ is a disastrous Labor policy, with unacceptable waiting times for surgery. TAFE and vocational training is another mess that needs fixing because of Labor’s incompetence.
So (and excuse me again if this offends you), if you want to ‘cut the crap’ in Croydon, I need your support to tackle the grass-roots issues that the major parties have ignored. I am running for Croydon to make a real difference in our community. I want to see Croydon get the attention it deserves, instead of lip service.
People of Croydon - please look at my policy goals and support me, a true local, on Election Day. You can email me at email@example.com or call me call the campaign office on (08) 8545 0400.
P.S. If you would like to get involved in the campaign as a volunteer that would be great. Call or email me, or contact the SA-BEST campaign office on (08) 8545 0400.

My Policy Priorities
I support ongoing reform of the pokies industry – reducing maximum bets and reducing pokies in pubs. And online gambling needs to be more tightly regulated, as well as in-your-face sports-betting advertising. The state government rakes in over $300 million a year in gambling taxes, but only provides a pittance in rehabilitation services, with only 10-15% of those affected getting help. That must change.
Social and domestic violence
I fully support SA-BEST’s commitment to programs and advocacy aimed at reversing the increased prevalence of violence in society, especially domestic violence and its causes. This would include supporting those services aimed at providing victims with education and financial independence.
Energy prices and cost of living pressures
Electricity prices in SA are amongst the highest in the world. SA-BEST’s energy plan is all about getting prices down with more reliable supply and greater competition.
Business incentives and education
Small businesses and technological start-up organisations are vital for our communities and employment growth. SA-BEST will fix the TAFE debacle so that people can get the right vocational training they deserve, and find suitable employment opportunities in SA.
