Tom is the SA-BEST candidate for the seat of Giles. He is a prominent businessman and community leader in Whyalla and on the Eyre Peninsula.
Tom is driven to get results for regional South Australians, and especially his local communities.
For the past eleven years he has been a member of the Whyalla City Council, where he has served as Deputy Mayor and Acting Mayor during the Steel City’s most turbulent times. Tom has been widely acknowledged for playing an important role in the negotiations which saved the steelworks - the city’s biggest industry and employer.
He moved to Whyalla 40 years ago as an apprentice electrician at the then BHP- owned steelworks, before branching out into his own electrical installation business. From there, he built up Electrical Discounters to become the largest electrical retailer in regional South Australia, with outlets in Whyalla, Port Augusta, Port Pirie and Port Lincoln now employing up to 40 people. With his wife Angela, Tom also opened up South Australia’s very first video hire store in Whyalla and it is still doing well.
Tom is a dedicated family man. He and Angela have four children, Nicole (aged 32), Scott (26), Dimitri (22) and Nicholas (19). Their sons are employed at the steelworks while Nicole works in mental health at the Whyalla Hospital. He is extremely proud that three generations of the Antonio family have worked at the steel works.
With SA-BEST, Tom wants to ensure GFG Alliance, the new owner of the steel works, has all the support needed to succeed in achieving their bold expansion plans and he is determined to build an even stronger economic future for his city and the regions in the seat of Giles, from the Eyre Peninsula to Coober Pedy.
Tom is also acutely aware there are many other major issues in Giles that need to be tackled head-on; from energy bills to job security, vocational training, substance abuse, mental health and aged care services, education and road infrastructure.
