Raj is the SA-BEST candidate for the seat of Newland, a place she first called home when she arrived in Australia 22 years ago.
Born in India, before coming to Australia she was an actor, TV presenter, hotel manager, and also a volunteer with Oxfam and Blue Cross, a street dog rescue centre.
A graduate in Hotel Management, Raj has over 20 years’ experience in a Sales and Marketing environment, within the Hospitality, Tourism, Arts, Sports and Charity sectors, with experience spanning India, Australia and the Middle East.
Raj is very excited to be representing the community she has been part of for nearly 22 years. She lives in Fairview Park and previously resided in Banksia Park and Forreston.
Since coming to Australia Raj has been involved with her local community at a grassroots level. She has volunteered with many organisations including Charity Direct, Cirkidz, Youthinc, a foundation for disadvantaged young South Australians, Experimental Arts Foundation and as an Ambassador for OzAsia Festival, to name a few. She was one of the founding board members of the Australia-India Business Council and in 2013 was appointed to the South Australia-India Advisory Council working with a team to create a 10-year India engagement strategy for the SA Government. Raj is currently the CEO of Eye Play Sport, a not-for-profit organisation that helps Australia’s blind and vision-impaired people play sport or have some sort of recreational outlet.
Raj’s work saw her charity Kids Future Kids win the Prime Minister’s Award for Excellence in Community Business Partnerships in 2006. She was nominated as the South Australian Partnerships Ambassador for the Department of Families, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs (FACSIA). In April 2012, she was included on the Worldwide Who’s Who Directory for her social advocacy services. In November 2017, her charity Blind Sporting Council won the IABCA national award for Excellence in Community Services, proving that it is not the size of the organisation that matters, but the size of the vision.
From her humble beginnings in Australia, Raj has become one of our State’s most passionate citizens and a driving force in the community. As a migrant, woman, single mother, employee and business person, she has faced a whole gamut of experiences to achieve excellent outcomes and raise pride in the community and our State.
Raj is keen to promote the values of social equity, gender equality, innovation and entrepreneurship and increase understanding of the benefits of cultural diversity and community.
Raj believes in community ownership and welcomes everyone in Newland to connect with her to discuss the challenges and the opportunities to draft fully costed, accountable policies for people, not politicians.
Believing in being positive, Raj is determined to look forward rather than play the blame game. She would like to see Newland:
- Develop a hub for innovation and entrepreneurship for our retail sector;
- Develop and promote Newland as a destination of choice for tourism and new business investment;
- Address the alarming decline in TAFE enrolments and the growing disconnect between the needs of students and teaching methodologies;
- Receive better health care with reduced waiting times, ease of access, and strategies for recruitment and retention of upskilled staff;
- Address the rising cost in electricity bills through sufficient, diverse, and reliable renewable energy sources;
- Become an Arts Hub through sourcing increased funding for arts organisations;
- Level the playing field for all disadvantaged members of our community, including children, youth, and seniors, through social equity and empowerment.
Raj’s motto is #NoPollieWaffle. She loves this community, as does her family. She is a real local and is honoured representing Newland for the SA-BEST Party.
