John is our candidate for the seat of Heysen. He is excited about the opportunity to represent the people of Heysen.
John joined the South Australia Police in 1979 and served much of his early career at Port Adelaide. Throughout his career he developed an acute understanding the value of a strong community and the benefits of good working relationships with community representatives. Promoted to the rank of Sergeant in 1988, John, his wife Cathy and their new born daughter moved to Port Augusta where John was responsible for managing the Police Prosecution Service. Working with rural and remote communities, including Aboriginal Elders in the APY Lands, provided John with a variety of unique experiences not available in the city.
After returning to Port Adelaide, John left SAPOL in 1991 to work with his father in a family business. During this time John and his family moved to Upper Sturt, where they lived on a bush acreage. Being born at Stirling Hospital, Cathy was keen for the family to grow up in a Hills environment, sending both of their daughters to Stirling Kindy, Crafers Primary and Heathfield High School. After working through the challenges facing small business operators, John rejoined SAPOL in 1997 coinciding with his father moving into semi-retirement.
John then worked as an operational member at Norwood before returning to Prosecution Services, where he was again promoted to the rank of Sergeant. John then became the Officer in Charge of the Police Prosecution Unit at Mount Barker, where he served for several years, before moving to the SAPOL Road Safety Section. John was recognised as Police Officer of the Year in 2012.
John has been an active member of Rotary for many years. He has worked with charities including the Leukaemia Foundation and Movember and has been an advocate for men's health, particularly mental health. John was proud to receive a Mayoral Community Service Award in 2017, as part of National Volunteers Week.
